The moon landing with the MTV Flag will always be one of the most memorable moments in television history. As most of you may know, MTV stands for “MUSIC TELEVISION”, notice the bold on Music, but the channel that was once the takeoff ground for many of today’s most successful musicians, is now just full of corny  reality shows that have NOTHING to do with music. In the 80’s and 90’s, MTV was the place to be when someone wanted to watch the latest music video, and check out the hottest new artists. “TRL” was the place where artists like Britney Spears and Destiny’s Child got their shine for the first time.

Music Videos were the biggest part of MTV back in the day.  If it weren’t for the music network, Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” video wouldn’t have been anything as successful as it is today. In fact, at the beginning, Music Videos is mostly all that MTV played. The term “VJ (Video Jockey)” came from MTV which was a spin on the word DJ for someone who played videos. MTV broke many barriers in the music industry, including the color barrier. Michael Jackson was the first artist to get regular spins on the network.

Today, MTV has completely dismissed Music on their main channel. Even when they were packed with reality shows like “Laguna Beach” and “The Hills”, they still at least played music videos at some point in the day. Now, theres is absolutely none. Just flip through your Guide on your cable and see for yourself. Nothing on MTV has anything to do with music. MTV has gone against what they stood for, which was simply MUSIC, and instead just try and get viewers by having “realistic” reality shows, which are mostly all scripted anyways.

I can’t act like I don’t know about MTV’s offspring’s MTV Hits, MTV Jams, MTVU, etc. Those channels do play music continually, but thats not the point I am trying to make. The point is that the channel does not stand by it’s name. And even though they do have those channels that play music, MTV no longer has those shows that influenced Pop Culture, and made music much more interesting (e.g. TRL, Headbangers Ball, FNMTV, MTV Unplugged).

I say MTV should get rid of all of it’s offsprings and play music videos regularly on its regular network. They should bring back shows like TRL or, at least, FNMTV, where artists had a pedestal to show their talent. I believe MTV is doing everything backwards. They should have a separate channel to play those cheesy reality shows, not a separate channel to play music videos, which is what they should be playing in the first place. If not, they should change their name to RSTV (Reality Show Televsion), because at least they wouldn’t be two-faced then.
